Theres a certain point when its useless to continue talking to someone who does nothing but use ad hominems. Its just killing whatever argument they are trying to make anyways. And usually in that case nothing can be resolved or learned, which was the reason of engagement in the first place. Turns into a big waste of time.

But, on the other hand, discussions with people who we know are sensible are worth the time.
